Getting started
How do I know this is legit? I've never heard of you before.
Fair question — worth asking about any company you haven't heard of. Two things you can check for yourself rather than take our word for: a 12-month guarantee — if you or the storyteller can't finish for any reason and the book never goes to print, you can request and receive a full refund, and every recording is stored on secure infrastructure with a ten-year guarantee, so the QR codes in your book keep working even in the unlikely event this company doesn't. We're a young UK company — we're not going to claim a track record we don't have yet. If you'd rather talk it through with a person before sending anything, email us and you'll get a real reply, not a script.
How does it actually work?
You choose an edition and tell us whose story it is. They respond to fourteen chapters of questions entirely at their own pace, by speaking, by typing, or by handing over recordings they already have — most people find it easy enough (and often genuinely enjoy it) that they work through it in around two to four weeks. We shape everything into a narrative. Every chapter is approved by you before anything is printed. Then it arrives, hardback, with a QR code on each page that plays their actual voice.
Do they need to download an app or create an account?
No. They use a secure link we send them — no app, no password to remember, no account setup.
What if they don't want to speak into a phone?
That's fine — voice, typing, and uploading existing recordings are all treated as equally valid ways to answer. Most people mix all three across the fourteen chapters.
Can we use recordings we already have?
Yes — and this is genuinely unusual in this category. Old voicemails, a birthday video on someone's phone, a cassette tape, a voice note from years ago: upload whatever exists straight to the relevant chapter, and it's built into the book alongside anything they go on to record fresh.
What if the person has already passed away?
We can still build their book, entirely from what the family already has of them. See our Memorial editions for how this works.
The book itself
What's the QR code, and how does it actually work?
Every chapter has a small QR code printed on the page. Scan it with any phone camera and it plays the original recording of that story — their real voice, not a summary of it. These QR codes work only while the linked audio or video remains hosted and available — some QR-linked media may be retained to help preserve already-printed book links, but we have not yet published a fixed retention period. If media linked to a QR code is deleted, that code may stop working.
How many copies do we get, and can we order more?
Memory includes 1 copy, Heritage includes 3 copies, Legacy includes 5 copies. Each is designed around a typical family size — Heritage and Legacy exist specifically so siblings don't have to share or photocopy one original. Ordering extra copies separately isn't available online yet — email us if you need more than your edition includes and we'll sort it out directly.
Can we see it before it's printed?
Yes. Once every chapter is approved by you, you'll receive a full PDF proof of the finished book for a final check before anything goes to the printer.
Timing, guarantee & delivery
How long does it take?
Standard timeline is two to four weeks from when the storyteller starts, depending on their pace. Express delivery (+£15) cuts print and shipping to around a week once the book is finalised. Memorial editions are fast-tracked by default, since they're often tied to a funeral or memorial date.
What if it isn't ready in time?
This isn't really a print deadline — it's a promise for when things don't go to plan. If you or the storyteller aren't able to finish, for any reason, including the ones nobody wants to think about, and the book hasn't gone to print within 12 months of purchase, you can request and receive a full refund. No admin, no argument.
Where do you print and ship?
Everything is printed and shipped within the UK.
Pricing
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay once. There's no renewal, no annual charge, and no ongoing relationship required after your book arrives — unlike some competitors in this category who bill yearly.
What's Voicever?
An optional add-on (£59) that generates a full narration of the finished book in the storyteller's own voice, built from their recordings, delivered as an audio file you can keep and share. It's separate from the QR codes, which are included on every edition and always play their real, unedited recordings as-is.
Voicever buyers get a second QR code on each chapter page — one for the original recording (as always, free), one for the narrated version — so both are available directly from the printed book, not just as a separate download.
Your data & privacy
What happens to the recordings, photos and videos we send you?
They're used only to build your book. Depending on how your book and audio features were generated, your recordings, photos and videos may be stored in our application storage, and some material may also be stored in Cloudflare R2, a separate cloud storage service — for example, so that QR codes in a printed book can keep working. We have not yet published a fixed retention period for these files; if that matters to you, please ask us before ordering or before requesting deletion.
Do we get copies of our original recordings and photos back?
That's the plan for every order — everything you sent us, so you're never solely dependent on our storage. Right now that happens by request rather than an automatic download link: email us once your book is finished and we'll send everything over. Memorial Premium is the only edition that includes a physical copy (a USB drive) in the box as standard — sending a USB with every order isn't something we can do at these prices, so for every other edition it's a digital handover.
Who can access our recordings?
Access to your recordings is limited to the small team producing or supporting your book and the trusted service providers needed to process it. We don't sell your data. We may use those providers to transcribe recordings, help draft your book, and — if you order it — generate Voicever narration. Your printer only receives the finished print files, not your original recordings.
Can we ask you to delete our data?
Yes — contact us any time and we'll review what you want deleted. When a subject is deleted from the app, their profile, interview answers and files held in our local application storage are removed. Some audio or video that's already linked to a printed book's QR code may be retained so that the QR code keeps working. Those retained storage links do not include identifying details in the object key, but the recording or video itself may still be personal data. Deleting data may affect a QR code in a book that's already been printed.
What about ordering a book for someone who's passed away?
We rely on the ordering family member's word that they have the right to use the recordings and photos they send us. If you have any doubt about who else in the family should be consulted, we'd always encourage having that conversation before you start.
